Difference between SD and SDHC Flash Memory Cards
Looking at both cards below, they both look physically the same but will they work in any device that can fit them?
The card on the right is an SD(Secure Digital) card, with capacities that range from 1MB to 2GB. The card on the left is SDHC(Secure Digital High Capacity), with capacities that range from 4GB to as high as 32GB. The two cards are not interchangeable, thus you cannot use an SDHC card on a device that is only compatible with SD cards. SDHC compatible devices are however backward compatible with SD cards.

Q: How do I know if my camera is SDHC compatible?
A: Check the manual for your camera, you can also look up the specifications for your camera on a search engine such as Google. If the slot on your camera is specified as SD, then it will not work with an SDHC card.
Q:The SDHC card works fine in my camera. Why is it not being detected on my computer even though it fits in the memory card slot?
A: Your memory card reader may not be SDHC compatible. As mentioned earlier, both cards look physically the same but SD host adapters cannot read SDHC cards.
Q:Can I make my SD card reader capable of reading SDHC cards by downloading a driver or software?
A: The incapability of SD card readers to read SDHC cards is hardware based and no driver or software can make an SD card reader capable of reading SDHC cards. Some SD card readers support SDHC through a firmware upgrade, however most SD card readers do not have any firmware upgrade available.
